A new black version of the titanium chopsticks "Alatus" has been released. "Alatus" was designed with the aim of making alternative, long-lasting, and aesthetically sound products. The new black version is coated with ion plating, which makes it more durable, solid, high grade, and aesthetic.

Ion Plating
Ion plating is one of the most advanced surface finishing processes in the trade. It involves adding a layer of titanium nitride, which has a high chemical stability, to the component to be plated. It come into the limelight after it was used for the surface of the moon-buggy of the Apollo program.

Characteristics of ion plating
* It protects the titanium surface.
* It makes the protect durable.
* It has antirust properties; since it is a nonmetal, such as titanium nitride, moisture and oxygen cannot enter the film.
* It does not come off easily; since the plating is deep into the surface, coherency is higher than in normal plating, and the film ensure higher durability.
* The film is nonmetallic; therefore, there is no chance of an allergic reaction.

素材とデザイン、また人の行動や動作を含む所作に着目した新作チタニウム製お箸『Alatus(アラツゥス)』 をご紹介いたします。

Background
日本での割り箸の消費量は、年鑑約250億膳。その9割以上の輸入元は中国。中国では、年間450億膳の割り箸を製造、およそ166 万立方メートル、約2500万本の木材に相当し、それは、18500戸の木造住宅にあたる木材を消費しているそうです。中国でも割り箸の消費は増え始め、環境保護のために中国政府は、木材製品の関税を上げるなどの処置をとり、森林伐採に歯止めをかけようとしています。また、木材から育成のはやい竹材にシフトする傾向のある割り箸ですが、竹は時間経過すると変色するという性質から、多量の漂白剤で変色防止加工が施されており、食の道具としての疑問を呈しています。このような背景から、「割り箸の代替品を」という目的で生まれたのがこのAlatusです。また、永く使い続けて頂く為に、道具としての機能だけでなく、"もの"としての美しさ、それを使う際の動作としての美しさにもこだわりました。

We are pleased to inform you the titanium chopsticks "Alatus" which paid attention to material, design, movement and action include human behavior is ready.

Background
The consumption of disposable wooden chopsticks in Japan is around 25 billion a year, and it has been reported that China is one of the largest exporters of around. The 90% of the chopsticks that are manufactured is China. China produces around 45 billion chopsticks a year, which is equivalent to about 1,660,000 cubic mater, and 18,500 wooden houses. In addition, the consumption of disposable wooden chopsticks in China has seen an increase, and the Chinese government has imposed tax on all wooden products in a bid to preserve China's forests and to protect the environment. Furthermore, recently, chopsticks manufactures have shifted from wood to the faster-growing bamboo as the main material in chopsticks. However, one drawback of bamboo is that its color changes with the passage of time, and in order to prevent this, large quantities of bleach have to be used. Therefore, it is a rather doubtful substitute for wood in making chopsticks. It is with this background that Alatus was born in search of an alternative material for disposable chopsticks. In addition, specific care has been taken with regard to the esthetics of the object and its use as a lifelong product.

近日、新作ができてきます。一足お先にご紹介！

何年も前から企画していたチタニウム製のお箸です。前の記事は、こちらからどうぞ。
２本で２４gと想像していたよりも軽い仕上がりになりました。こちらのお箸は、「割り箸の代替品を」として考えたもので、素材は、食器洗浄機においても耐久性のある素材であるということが基本事項でした。チタンは、ご存知のように、軽くて強く、航空機や人工骨として使われるなど、人体への金属アレルギー等もなく、カトラリーとしても適する素材です。また、長くご愛用頂く為に、道具としての機能だけでなく、"もの"としての美しさ、それを使う動作としての美しさにもこだわりました。

このお箸は、スタンド状に置く事ができ、箸先がテーブルにつかないので、箸置きの必要がありません。また、スタンド状態に置こうと思うと動作が優雅にならざるをえないというのもこの箸の特徴です。

持ち方は人それぞれ、お好きに持って頂いてよいのですが、手の小さい方は左の写真のようにもっていただくとよいかもしれません。また、手の大きめの方は、右の写真のようにもっていただくと長さ的にもよいかもしれません。



有機曲線は、手にフィット感を与え、持ち位置を安定させます。ご自身の最適な持ち方をいろいろお試しください。ライフサクルの長い"もの"として、永くご愛用いただければ本望です。また、詳細は後ほどお知らせいたします。もうしばらく、お待ちください。

This is a pair of chopsticks made by titanium which I was planning for years. As for the former article, please click here.
The weight is only 24g, it became lighter than we imagined. The original concept was to make an alternative product of disposable wooden chopsticks, and using a material to resist in dish washers. Titanium is light and strong material that is used for air plane or artificial bone. There is not allergy to human body. It is a suitable material for cutlery, and was dwelled on not only for the tool, but esthetics as "object" and "movement" too.

This chopsticks stand by self, and the chopsticks head doesn't touch on the table surface, that means the chopsticks rest doesn't need anymore. If you would like to put in the stand shape, movement of hand becomes elegant.

Everyone hold the chopsticks as you like, but if your hand is small, you should better to hold in the left image way. If your hand is bigger, you should better to hold in right image way.



The organic curve will fit on your hand, and gives you a stable position. Please find your best holding position. It would be happier if people use it habitually for long time as a long life cycle object. We will let you know when we can inform the more details. Thanks.

エコバッグ

このバッグは、オーガニックコットン製のエコバッグにアートワークを施したヒロミ・キム　オリジナルエコバッグです。6月26日から7月6日にトロントのKeep Six Contemporary [The Nomadic "decob"]展で展示販売されます。

作品のタイトル：　Sparkling Green

作品のコンセプト：
視・聴・嗅覚で体感することによって、体全体で緑を意識し、環境問題の一考に導きます。また、仮にこれ自体が捨てられるようなことがあっても再生を即すメッセージを込めた作品です。

この作品は、全体に天然の羊毛100％でつくられたフェルトを使用し、835枚の葉の形にカットしたものでかばん全体が覆われています。数枚の葉だけ色違い（ピンクとオレンジ）のフェルトを使い、その中に種や香りを縫いこみました。仮に捨てられるようなことがあっても、土と水と太陽のあるところでなら、芽をだす可能性があり、そこから再生のチャンスがあります。また、このバッグをもち歩いていて、必要な時に、その種をまくこともできます。

ピンクの葉に縫い付けた種は、フラックスという古代エジプト時代より栽培されているハーブで、茎は繊維、種子は薬用・工業用に利用されているものです。夏になると、ブルーあるいは白い清楚なかわいい花を咲かせます。

また、オレンジの葉には、ヒノキオイルをしみこませた木片を縫いつけ、木の香りを漂わせながら、嗅覚を刺激することで森林や緑を体感し、意識を高めます。

視・聴・嗅覚で体感するとは・・・
＊視：バッグは葉の形のフェルトで覆い尽くされ、視覚的にもグリーンを想起させます
＊聴：かすかに種の音がします

Eco-Bag

This bag is the Hiromi Kim original Eco-Bag which made artwork on an eco bag made by organic cotton. It is exhibited by an exhibition [The Normadic "decob"] in Keep Six Contemporary gallery of Toronto from June 26 to July 6.

The title of the work: Sparkling Green

The concept of the work:
First of all, you will be conscious of green in the whole body by sensing sight, hearing and smell, and lead to the consideration of the environmental problem. In addition, it is the work with a message to urge revival even if it itself is thrown away.

The work was used felt made from 100% natural merino wool, and the whole surface was covered by the felt that were cut in leaf form of 835 pieces. Only several different colors (pink and orange) leaves sewed fragrance and seeds into it. Where there are soil, water and place with the sun, it may shoot up even if thrown away, and there is a chance of the revival from there. It is possible to seed when it is necessary too.

As for the seed sewed on a pink leaf, it is a kind of herb that cultivated from the ancient Egyptian period called the FLAX. The stem used for fiber, the seed used for medical and industry. In the summer, it blooms blue or white pretty flowers.

On the orange leaf, the wood chips soaked Hinoki(Japanese cypress) oil was sewed. The fragrance of the tree will stimulate sense of smell and raise awareness.

Sensing bodily by three senses:
*sight: the bag was covered with leafs exhaustively
*hearing: you will hear a sound of seed subtly
*smell: the aromatic fragrance of tree

チタン製箸の提案プロジェクト　　

アジアの多くの国では、割り箸の消費が増えています。これらは、衛生的観点と経済的であるという観点から消費が拡大してきました。日本国内のみで、年間約250億膳の割りばしを消費しています。その９割以上の輸入先は、中国です。

中国では、年間450億膳の割りばしを製造し、それらの原料となる木材や竹が毎年消費されています。2000年より中国が輸出する割り箸は、150,000トンになるといわれています。これは、およそ1,660,000（166万）立方メートル、これは　25,000,000（2500万本）もの木材に相当します。

日本での消費量をわかりやすく説明すると、東京ドーム7個分の木材、18500戸の木造住宅の家が立つといわれており、これらを毎年捨てているわけです。中国でも昨今、割りばしの消費が増え始め、中国政府は、２００６年３月に木材の製品に対して10％関税を課し、中国国内で悪化する森林伐採に歯止めをかけようとしています。

割りばしに関しては、その後、育成の早い竹製のものにシフトする傾向があり、竹の割りばしの比率が増えつつあります。ですが、その竹製割りばしは、時間が経過すると変色するという性質から、亜硫酸ナトリウムという薬品での変色防止加工が施されており、その使用量に対して、日本国内で疑問や不信感が高まってきています。

最近は、一般の方の環境に対する意識が高まり、マイ箸をもちあるく人が多いようですが、日本で割りばしを使うのは、主に外食産業、飲食店やお弁当などを食べる時が大半です。飲食店に関して言えば、食器洗浄機等の設備が設置されているので、使い捨てのものを削減し、できるだけ洗浄して再度使用する製品を提案をするのは不可能ではないはずです。

人が使用したものを再度使うというのに消費者が抵抗あるのなら、フォークやナイフ、スプーンも使えません。食器洗浄機でも耐久性のある割りばしの代替え品の企画とその宣伝効果のある高いクオリティ製品を提示することにより、森林の使い捨て等の環境破壊に少しでも歯止めをかけ、また人々の意識を高め、豊かな生活スタイルを提供するというのが今回のチタン箸の提案です。

チタン製にこだわったというのには、理由があります。金属の中でもアレルギーを起こさず、海水でも錆びない、軽量などの利点があり、カトラリー関連の製品として使用するのに優れた素材であると推奨するからです。さらに、樹脂製品よりも耐久性ははるかに高く、永く使え、リサイクルも可能です。

近年の気候変動は過去にない異常気象だということが分かってきています。予想を超えたスピードで、キリマンジャロの雪が解け、南極の氷棚が崩壊しつつあり、多くのその地域に住む動植物が絶滅しつつあります。

Titanium Chopsticks Project

It is the suggestion of chopsticks made by titanium. 

The use of chopsticks is prevalent in major Asian countries. The disposable wooden chopsticks started being used in daily life for sanitary and economic reasons. A total of 25 billion pairs of chopsticks are used in a year only in Japan. The country that offers cheap chopsticks is China; it produces about 45 billion pairs of chopsticks a year, consuming millions of trees and bamboo plants. Since 2000, the volume of China's total annual export of disposable chopsticks has averaged at 150,000 tons, valuing at approximately US$ 150 million. 1.66 million cubic meters of timber (approximately 25 million trees) is annually consumed in chopstick production.

If we explain the consumption in Japan intelligibly, seven times Tokyo Dome woods or 18,500 wooden houses can build and throw these away every year. In China too, chopsticks are being used for sanitary reasons. In March 2006, the Chinese government introduced 10% tax on disposable wooden chopsticks in a bid to preserve China's forests for environmental reasons.

As for wooden chopsticks, tends to shift to bamboo chopsticks because bamboo grows up early, the ratio of disposable bamboo chopsticks is increasing afterwards. But bamboo has a character to change color when time passes, that's why it is used exceed amount of the chemical called  sulfurous acid sodium to prevent the change color. The exceed chemical amount was caused doubt and distrust in Japan.

There is a reason why I was particular about a product made in titanium. I consider the superior material to use as cutlery. Titanium does not get rusty even in seawater and cause allergy. It is light weight. Furthermore, it has highly durability than the resin products, and the recycling is possible, too.

The recent climate change is evident. It is proceeding high speed beyond the expectation, snows of Kilimanjaro is loosing, and the ice shelf of the South Pole is collapsing, and the animals and plants living in the many areas are becoming extinct.
